i am a student recreating the first shuttle launch in 3ds max(3.1 and 4) can i do it with max alone or should i get combustion as well? i am concerned about the smoke plumes the most. if anybody has done a shuttle launch or knows someone who has please reply.

i neither have done it or know someone who has... but from what i have done with the combustion tool in max 4 ... you can get fairly good smoke from it... play around with it ... and you never know you just much get something that you like. :)

A shuttle launch?.. ??? I guess you could do it with particles in 3DsMax 3.1. I don't know anything about R4 :'(. You could use 'SuperSpray' for the jets, and 'Blizzard' for the expanding flames on the ground...
Simply experiment with particle systems...
