Recommended Materials/Mapping Books/Tutorials?

Greetings all,

I'm new to 3D Studio Max and am having trouble grasping materials and mapping. I've read a few things on the subject but just can't seem to grasp the concept of making new materials. Are there any books or online tutorials/articles that someone can recommend?

Just about any book on 3ds max is going to have a section about materials and mapping.  "3ds max in depth" and "3ds max bible" are decent books if you are a beginner.  Have you looked at the tutorials or the help section that come with max?  They explain everything just as well or better than any book you will buy.  "When all else fails, read the instructions".
