3DS mesh welding anomalies on export.

Hi there - Been finding my way around 3DS for the past few weeks, and I'm having a bit of a problem using the meshes with a paper folding program named Pepakura.

When I export meshes I get a situation where some or all of the faces seem to be unattached i.e. when I export a box I get 6 separate faces each with 4 vertices overlapping 4 other vertices which happen to be touching each other but not welded together.

Currently I'm opening them in a freeware program called Metasequoia and performing a function called 'Join Closed Vertices', which seems to do the trick.

Any idea what's happening, or what I can do to stop this?
