pre-multiplied and non-pre-multiplied alpha chanels

Im rendering from studio max into Tifs and Tgas.
With the Tga save, I am able to choose pre-multiplied alpha or non-pre-multiplied alpha. However, there is no choice for Tif. Am I right in assuming that the Tif's alphas are pre-multiplied??? Also, when putting renders through Quark, InDesign, and broadcast compositing software, what is the best format to use? Should images be rendered on black or white backgrounds? Cheers
