How do I turn my animation into a fully rendered playing .avi file?

Assuming you have set the render range and camera(s) in Render Globals:
save your scene,
open command prompt and navigate to your project/scenes/ folder.
type in "render scenefile.mb" (or the relevant command for your renderer of choice)
you'll have a bunch of frames when finished.
Using Quicktime Pro or VideoMach or Virtual Dub, compile them using the codec of your choice into an avi file.

If you have rendered in layers, you will need to composite them first (AfterFX, Fusion, Combustion etc).

I think, that I know what is your problem.
So, at first open Window>Rendering editors> render globals.
Under the start frame set:1
Under end frame set: number when your animation is ended.
Under the file prefix set name of animation,
under frame/ animation#ext. set:name.#.ext.
Than choose render, under "Render using" in drop down list, like Mental ray or something else like RenderMan.
Than when you r finish this press Space bar, and than point the cursor to section named "Render". Than go to Bach Render> option box. Than you can enable both processors (if you have machine with two), and than press button Batch Render.
This is all! :)
