In Need of Guidance

I'm currently working as a graphic designer for a firm that handles litigation graphics and animations. I really want to get into the 3D artist/animation business, but don't know what steps to take. Can anyone recommend schools in the NYC area or give me some guidance as to how I can go about starting a career in this business?
