i dont know much about it but i do know it means Maya Embedded Language...it is a scripting language that lets u customize Maya.

it is recommended u know scripting and programming.

Mel stands for Maya Enbedded language . similar to any other scripting language. [ like perl / PHP ] . is very powerful and most of the work u do through ur UI can be done directly through scripts :) . Visit to find lnks :)http://tyro3d.port5.com

Pretty much everyone’s got it right. MEL is Maya's scripting language that allows you to do simple things from creating shelf buttons for quicker workflows to complicated expressions and other plug-ins. There are tons of tutorials out there and sites dedicated to MEL. Here's one to look over.
