Invisible edges---

Ok, I'm making my first attempt at "box modeling" a head using editable mesh in Max 5.  I am actually quite pleased with the results so far, but the invisible edge thing is a bit annoying.  I have finished the majority of the larger features of the face, but every time I try to start on things like the nostril opening, or the ear, those damn edges act up.  I have noticed also that turning edges doesn't make them collapse into the adjacent edge, but leaves two independent edges running parallel, so close that you cannot tell that it is in fact two edges.  This leads to a terrible mess later if you try to move a nearby vertex.  I feel I need to be able to manipulate the mesh with greater fluidity.  Is there a way to weld a vertex directly onto an edge instead of another vertex?  Weld edges?  What is the best way to keep my polygon count low, and control the complexity of my model??
