Level of detail consistent throughout the model

Hi I am Samo from Slovenia and I am modeling with 3ds max 4 for a few weeks now, and I have a problem...

I have difficulties maintaining the level of detail consistent throughout the model... I am using the subdivision technique for now, and I realy can't get the shape I want using low polygon, becouse when I mesh smooth my model I don't get the resoults I would like to... So I start cutting edges and get complicate resoult...

Is there any way someone could help me? I mean I know it's all practice practice practice, but some advices or practical examples would realy be usefull... THANK YOU ALL!

if you think of making lods....like stages in drawing, then you should be fine.
