Mesh modelling and  render time

I am currently mesh modeling a skeleton hand (will post up when finished), which will be textured but would eventually like to animate.

1) To speed up render time, should I be wary of the number of segments/level of mesh smooth used.
2) Will I lose quality, if so, any tips to speed up the rendering?
3) With the possibility of animating, is there anything I should be doing now while modelling to make the animation easier?

Sorry if its basic questions, just interested about any new 'time' saving ideas.
