NT4, win2000 or XP??
By skogskalle on Oct 24, 2001 01:39 PM
IŽve just bought 3DSMAX4.2...
I already have win98 (which doesnt work well with MAX) and winNT4...

Does anyone know if win2000 or winXP works better with MAX4.2 than winNT4?

Are the newer operating systems faster??
or can i use winNT4 with good results??

thanks in advance
/Kalle

First of all, win98 SE works plenty well with Max, it's even stabler than NT4 (Isnt it incredible?!)

If you have the cash, get yourself Win2k and a nice 3d Labs Oxygen ('bout 350$) and you'll be sittin pretty.

It's not 'better' than a GeForce, but it's great for 3d work - it's not a game card. It's also damn cheaper than a GeForce 3. There are 3d boards that kick the snot out of a GeForce for 3d work, but they're mucho expensive.
If you have a GeForce 3 (or even 2), you might as well keep it, it's going to do a great job, but if you want to save some cash and you only need it for 3d wok, you're better off getting a 3d Labs or Elsa card. Of course, if you only need a card for 3d work and have cash to BURN, you can get a nice 2000$ card too. ;)

iŽm gonna use the computer for both games and 3D-work....so i think iŽll bye a geforce after all...

and no....after buying MAX4 i sure as hell dont have that kinda money to "burn"... :)

i have another question too....(maybe i should post it as a new thread but...)

I read somewhere that MAX works great with dual (or more) CPU:s
but if you compare (for example) a dual p3 500 with a single p3 1000 MHz....which one is the fastest in MAX???

well, actually,
anyone who know anything about vid cards should know that
Geforce 3 cards are the best for the money as far as 3d content creation goes..
I couldn't recommend anyone buying cheap Oxygen cards when you can get much better preformence out of this "gameing" vid card.  If you want something that preforms better then your Geforce 3 card, expect to spend well over $1000...

Well, first of all, I wouldn't suggest going with a pentium, when you can get a Thunderbird 1.1 or 1.4 Ghz

I had a friend who had a 1.1 Ghz T-bird, a GeForce2, and 256megs of RAM and could bloody rotate 1 million poly scenes, with maps and lighting displayed, in real time (bout 60 fps, his refresh was set a bit higher though). The whole rig, minus monitor, cost him a bit over a thousand, and I've never seen that kind of performance off even a p4 1.5ghz with 512 RAM.
So, one can only speculate what a dual 1.1 T-bird machine with a GeForce3 and a nice gig of RAM could do.

I have a 1400 MHz T-bird...
just used the pentium as an example....

the thunderbird works just fine, i was just curious...

At the moment i have an old TNT2 ultra graphicsboard, so the speed in the viewports areŽnt that great....but i hope thatŽll change when i get my hands on a geforce3 next week...

if you have a TNT 2, use Heidi or what ever that thing is called, you'll get much better output with it...
your CPU will work harder, but it's faster then yer tnt2...
well, can be for sure, but it should help...

In my experience, Max's D3D doesn't work, or doesn't work well at all, and if you want to run it in OpenGL, you're better off in NT. Partition your HD, one with your gaming OS (Win98SE I think is best), and another partition with Win2k or NT4.
Best of both worlds ;)

do you have to install the OS:s on different partitions?  (that could explain the pretty sick behaviour of my last computer)

sorry, Koz, Not trying to be argumentative, but,
just Win2k with service pack 2 should suffice for games and 3d... there is a widdle thing with SP2, where you can turn on win98 compatibility mode, which will run almost all win98 games flawlessly...
unless you want to play DOS games,
which only the older OS's can play...

3dsmax4 is suppose to use alot of new D3d features. (vertex shader, and such) but, I have yet to hear any arguments that supports D3d as a useful driver for 3dmax..

just an FYI,
almost all demo discreet was running on last years sigraph (b4 max4 was released) was running on d3d. so apprently they were working hard on it..

if you want to dual boot,
have two partition,
C: and D:
install win98 first,
and install win2k...

If you have a Pentium 4 (p4) prosessor, I would recommend running WinXP - as it is optimized for P4... There is also a P4 performance pack for max4.2 at discreet's website

thanks again scootch!

nope, IoTski, i have an AMD 1400....but thanks anyway...
-----------------------

I guess iŽll find out if MAX4.2 works well in D3D or not with my new graphicsboard...
doesnt really matter though....it should work fine in OpenGL anyway....

3D Max works by machines AMD much faster than on P3 or P4. Speed is much faster. As all advise to work by machines AMD. It will be better if parent payments on chipset KT266A or 2 processor payments. In Russia everyone take from us AMD for work and for games.8)

I have a dual P3 1Ghz and I can't complain about the speed, I need some ram though as I only have 384Mb now I had 640Mb but one 256Mb module whent bad, so I'll buy a couple of 512Mb modules instead as soon as I can afford them. The rest of my system include a Creative Geforce2 GTS card, a ASUS CUV4X-D motherboard which is capable of handling 4gigs of ram and UDMA100. I use Win2K for Max and Win98 for Dvd playback and games (Can't play NFS3 on Win2K). I have partitioned the harddrive because of the problems you get otherwise.

I'm thinking about going to Win2K from ME. I'm running Max 3 so would I be able to run it in Win2K? Or would I have to fork over more cash to Discreet to support Max in Win2K?

Max3 will run on Win2k.. infact it will probably run better on Win2k than your WinME.. since Win2k with the right amount of RAM is about 50% faster than WinME...
