Or i need other application?

Yes, you can make photorealistic characters with 3ds max just as well as you could with any other application.  Plan to spend a lot of time.  It's not an easy thing to pull off.

Yep. And a nice renderer can help. The Max default scanline is -okay-, but you'll find yourself wanting Final Render or Brazil. Besides, Square Pictures used Renderman, not the default Maya renderer.

Final Render is da bomb.  You can make some nice skin with subsurface light scattering.
