finalRender just came out.  It is supposed to be the best GI rendering plugin made yet.  I haven't used it but I have seen some awsome samples made with it.  I don't know if it is cracked or not.

try these too

1.brazil (www.splutterfish.com) (there is a free version for download too)
2.VRay (www.chaoticdimension.com) for free
3.BMRT (www.exluna.com) maybe you need to obtain a connection plugin for use it inside 3dsmax, such as maxman (www.animallogic) or something else.

FinalRender is a plugin renderer for max (www.finalrender.com)

It features:

GI - highly optimised view dependent GI rendering (Basically calculates the effect of diffuse light bouncing around a scene)

Caustics - effect of light being bent & amplified through a refractive object or reflected from a reflective object)

Sub Surface Scattering - to simulate the volume & translusency of an object

It also has its own (far more accurate) raytracing engine,'real' lenses (like fisheye, spherical), unlimited network licenses, a texture baker (for 'baking' lighting information onto a model) mainly for use in game dev, an illustration renderer (for rendering technical drawings), object light (to turn anything into a light, powerful volumetrics (incluing light scattering & volumetric caustics), as well as a lightning fast volume light render effect.

the minus is with all this, the controls are hard to learn & theres a lot of them! Because there is a lot of options & controls it can take some tweaking to get a good looking image... :)

all for about $600!
