Seahawks swap CB Perrish Cox for DeShawn Shead

A day after signing former 49ers cornerback Perrish Cox, the Seahawks have reportedly released him and signed practice squad member DeShawn Shead to the 53 man roster.

Seahawks cornerback DeShawn Shead warms up before Seattle's preseason game against the Chargers on Aug. 8 in San Diego. The team has yet to announce the move, but is reported to have promoted cornerback Shead to take Cox's place.

It is speculated that the Seahawks may have reached a deal with veteran cornerback Antoine Winfield, who was with Seattle during 2013 training camp and the preseason but decided to retire after he didn't make the team. Winfield, 36, reportedly worked out for the Seahawks this week but was wrestling with the idea of coming out of retirement.

Seattle was also linked to longtime Seahawks cornerback Marcus Trufant, 32, who after 10 years with the Hawks is now unemployed after his preseason cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Then again, the news also suggests the Seahawks are comfortable with backups Byron Maxwell and Jeremy Lane. Maxwell is expected to start Monday against the Saints for Walter Thurmond, who was starting for injured Brandon Browner (groin) before getting slapped with a four game suspension Tuesday.

In a post to Twitter, Cox alluded to a non football reason for his sudden release from the Seahawks. The 6 foot 2, 220 pound defensive back spent most of last year on Seattle's practice squad until he was promoted in December when cornerbacks Sherman and Browner were hit with suspensions for violating the NFL's policy on performance enhancing drugs.

Sherman successfully appealed his punishment but Browner served a four game suspension, returning for the Chris Borland Jersey playoffs. During Browner's absence, Thurmond started opposite Sherman.

But now, the www.officialauthentic49ersshop.com/Bruce_Ellington_Jersey_49ers Seahawks are without Thurmond and Browner for most of this season's homestretch. Thurmond was suspended Tuesday for four games after testing positive for a banned substance, and won't be able to return to the field until Seattle's regular season finale Dec. 29 versus the Rams at CenturyLink Field.

And reports surfaced Monday that Browner, who is already out indefinitely with a groin injury, is facing a yearlong suspension for the same non PED violation. Fox Sports' Mike Garafolo reported that Browner completed his appeal hearing Wednesday, though a verdict could be several weeks away.

The 10 1 Seahawks host the 9 2 New Orleans Saints on Monday night, and will be facing the NFL's second ranked passing attack led by quarterback Drew Brees. The "Monday Night Football" game holds playoff implications for both teams, who will be vying for the NFC's No. 1 playoff seed and home field advantage in the postseason.
