soft shadows
By Kebdn on Sep 12, 2002 06:46 AM
Hello everyone,
I've got a problem by rendering the image at the bottom of this message. I use TrueSpace 4.3 and I want to add soft shadows to the image. Is there any other way than using shadowmaps?? here is the picture! http://www.kebdnk.com/glas.jpg Thanks Kebdn Re: soft shadows

You may want to take a look at virtualight, it's a plugin, but I don't know if they have a 4.x version. (would hope so). Otherwise you may want to check the PrimitiveItch site and look into Shaderlab. you might be able to find something that would help.
Of course, with 5 and up, you get things like RayCatcher, which really help for soft shadows. Lastly, without plugins and upgrades, have you tried a radiosity solution on the scene ? I've had mixed results with shadows, but I think that's my lighting setups more than anything else. ::) Re: soft shadows

Hey, BTW I'm a 4.3 user too.
You can also use clusters of lights bundled together and pointing in the same direction with a little offset variation to create softer shadows, it takes a little experimentation on setting up the lights, but it can be done without plugins. Re: soft shadows

Interesting feature.

The smoothies give rise to fake shadows that appear qualitatively like soft shadows without the cost of densely sampling an area light source .
