MAX Shadows...

Does anyone know if there's a way to do raytraced soft shadows?

Just pick the light you want to do raytraced shadows and at the shadows parameters change the shadows map to raytraced shadows. that all.

i think he ment SOFT shadows
only with some plugs, i believe Cebas ProOpticSuite for Max4 does that. And , maybe RayFX, which is absolutely free, from BlurStudios.

soft shadow, can be attained through shadow map, instead of ratraced, set the sample range and bitmap size to suite, large area to shade large shadow map size, very soft shadows larger sample range.

may not be what you want...but try this...

make a light and copy it to make a 4x4 grid of lights...group them...you can gat a nice falloff shadow effect...the more lights you add, the better it may look....slow render though

Problems with Ray Tracing:
no soft shadows
aliasing
no depth of field

Basically, the algorithm of ray tracing make the edge of the shadow hard. It seems not easy to make a soft shadow with ray tracing.

Just use multiple lights to make soft shadows. That's how it works in real life.
