Mirai introduction
By ambient-whisper on Aug 31, 2001 11:18 PM
well...looks like no one is talking in this area..so i thought that i would start.
i know that mirai isnt too well known so i dont expect many of you to know what it is...so i will attempt to inform you of what it is...and what its used for. Mirai is a 3d application just like 3dsmax,Lightwave,maya etc..and its known as the best solution for sub division modelling. It all started with symbolics about 15 years ago( the first subd modeller. Since then...Symbolics has gone through a few stages of refinements. N-gemoetry, N-world, and as of a year and a half ago.. Mirai... last year Nichimen was bought-out by a company named Winged Edge Technologies. up to this time..Mirai( and its predecessors) was known for being mostly a game modelling solution, but now..WingedEdge decided that they want to expand Mirais horizons and move into the movie industry.. research labs...etc..etc..while still being true to its gaming community. Some Companies that use it are Squaresoft, EA arts, Viewpoint, AT&T research labs... Also..it was used in the movie Vertical Limit for its particle tools in the Avelanche scenes.., in X-men for modelling Mystiques torso( in the flying scenes) so that it could be tracked on top of her and replace the attachment to her body... and its now being used in Lord of the Rings movies for creature creation, animation, etc.. mirai might be new to the industry..but it shows a lot of potential for becoming one of the 3d giants heres some further reading... mirai artist ( and is working on the lord of the rings) http://www.spiraloid.com/ sub division reading, tips, tutorials.., images..etc.. http://maxrovat.sns.hu/subdiv and the wingededge tech website( makers of mirai, nendo,etc..) http://www.wingededge.com/ hope that this introduction helps. enjoy!. err...i made a mistake..symbolics was a company that first developed the subd technology inside a 3d app ( subds were actually researched by catmull a few years before )..and the company was then bought by nichimen. Well, i thought I might chime in here.
I've been aware of Mirai since its launch. I'm a Maya user, though I've spent some time with Nendo, (for those who don't know, Nendo is the baby sister to Mirai) and have fallen in love with the toolsets and modeling environment. I can model twice as fast and with better concentration on form (rather than fussing with tools) in Nendo than I can in maya. Thank you for the great modeling tutorials and inspiration Martin.
