Which is the best 3d software (Max3D, Maya, Soft)
By Ahmed on Nov 20, 2000 06:08 AM
Some people say that Maya is better than Max, some say Max is batter than Maya. Some say Softimage, PowerAni, Lightwave.

1) What is the best 3D software to make animated movies.
2) Max default renderer is not too good. Is the Mental Ray improve it from other 3D software.
3)What are best 3D software for, Games, MoviesIndustry, Commercials.

unfortunately,Ahmed, there is mot such thing as the "best". You may consider BMW better than Porsche...I will argue. You must know what you want to do and then find/use the most appropriate tool.
There are some thing that you cannot do with Max, but, on the other hand, there are other thing you
may find impossible or hard to do in Maya.
For architectural renderings Max is quite good, but amination and f/x are more user-friendly in Maya.

There is a rather good explanation in
www.3drender.com on this subject. Pray visit it!

I don't use any of those programs. I have MAX but it's just 2 DAMN hard for me. Let me just use Bryce for some time :) But from my point of view, you should use the program you like the most or combine them. I hear a lot of that, that ppl make something in MAX and render it in Bryce. Or make objects in MAX and continue with it in Maya......

i have learned max but i'm got stack at the modeling. i think max is great with a lot of plugin available. but i like maya very much, maya is superfast with an eficient workflow and navigation. maya capability is the modeling packages where u can use nurbs, polygon and subd surfaces. the modeling tool is clearly defined. but the rendering is not so good. it doesn't support radiosity and the texturing process is quite hard to achieve. i think maya will have a great improvement and enhancement for every version updated. i'm appreciate that, waiting for the other version.

I have only really used Maya for modelling and animation.  U can use polys and Nurbs with superb tools available for each and is very user freindly.  The scripting language is also quite useful and easy to learn.  However, i agree with dewa3d, without Renderman, maya renders may not be as good as other packages out there.

everyone says that maya has a superb workflow...
i would like to differ..
maya is an app that is made by many different people...each concentrate at making powerful tools...but..since there are so many people working on it..they never think of how it can all come together in an orderly fashion...
the workflow in maya is nothing that would amaze me....its a very messed up application..
i say this because of the cludder that the interface has...and it gets worse when you get a few windows open...and you need them open..
its got great tools..but the workflow is just terrible.....it is one frustrating app..
the best work flow can be found in ....

softimage...houdini...mirai...are tied in 1st place
3dsmax...
lightwave...
maya would be somewhere in last...

thats my opinion based on my experience with these apps..

Maya:-

I think Ambient-whisper is right. I worked only in 3DsMax. But saw the snaps of Maya, Softimage, Houdini. I saw most images on raph.com with only a character staning. People like it because they just need to draw some curves. And the surfaces are much smooth. But I never saw any great work that Maya had done. It is just great in movies and the the rendering is not done in Maya.

3dsMax:-
You will find most of work on internet done by Max users. I think most 3d sites has better support for MAX than other soft. Some people don't like Max because they can't play with mesh and a bunch of vertices. Its nurbs are not fully made. But the rendering with MentalRay made it dream maker.

Houdini:-
I didn't work on it but you can see its work in movies THE MATRIX and X-MEN. I read the artical of animators of THE MATRIX nad X-MEN. And they like to work in Houdini.

I think...

Houdini
SoftimageXSI
3dsMax
Lightwave
Maya

Like so many I have searched far and wide after the dream app that would fulfill all my desires ;)

I started out using Max, it felt uphill all the way, everything seems to be added on top of what already exists without real integration in the workflow.
Now Maya is my favored software and all was good until I saw what Mirai could do...now i wait eagerly for the Mirai eval copy to arrive.

In the end I have to use what software the company favors, licenses costs a lot.

I think the answer is that none of the existing 3D apps is perfect, maybe in 10 years...but not now. Your best bet would be to concentrate on the software most commonly used in your field of interest.

I'm tossing in a vote for animation master. Its surface tools are much better than max's. Its bones are great as well.. Its my personal favorite and it only costs 300 dollars
