Oregon rises one spot to No

EUGENE Oregon rose one spot to 12th in the latest BCS standings released Sunday evening, keeping alive the Ducks' outside shot of clinching a fifth straight BCS bowl berth.

The Ducks, with a rating of .532, are one spot behind Arizona State and one spot ahead of Clemson. Northern Illinois is 14th in its quest for a BCS bowl bid.

Oregon's chances at a BCS bowl are slim but still possible. Some projections have the Ducks (10 2, 7 2 Pac 12) playing Alabama at the Orange Bowl, though a berth in the Dec. 30 Alamo Bowl against a Big 12 opponent is more likely.

Asked if he'd like to face newly dethroned Alabama, UO coach Mark Helfrich said Sunday: "Whatever unfolds is probably the right way . just look at it from this point it's so bizarre. There are so many things."

As college football enters its final week of games before bowls begin, Oregon will need help from "many things" to reach the BCS. Specifically, losses by Baylor (which plays Texas on Saturday) and Northern Illinois (which plays Bowling Green in the MAC championship game Friday) could free up an at large spot to one of the four BCS bowls. Though the www.officialauthentic49ers.com/74+Joe+Staley+Jersey+Cheap.html Huskies are from a non power conference, they are ahead of the leader of a power conference in Central Florida of the American Athletic, which is crucial for BCS rules.

By those rules, an undefeated Northern Illinois team would earn an automatic berth because it is ranked in the BCS top 16 and is higher "than that of a champion of a conference that has an annual automatic berth in one of the BCS bowls." NIU can also clinch an automatic berth regardless of UCF, however, with a ranking in the top 12 of next week's BCS standings.

The Ducks were 13th in last week's standings after a loss, their second this season, to Arizona.

The race for No. 1 was not close, with Florida State pulling a .995 rating. A fight for the No. 2 spot will go down to this weekend's conference championship games in the Big Ten and SEC, however. Ohio State (.950) is ranked second, ahead of Auburn (.923), which derailed previously No. 1 Alabama on Saturday on the final play of the Iron Bowl. The Buckeyes play Michigan State and the Tigers face Missouri in their respective conference championship games on Saturday.

The Crimson Tide fell to fourth and Missouri is fifth. Oklahoma State is sixth, Stanford seventh, South Carolina eighth, Baylor ninth and Michigan State 10th.

The dominoes must fall just so for Oregon to advance to the BCS, but it's a far cry from their seemingly broken BCS hopes after a forgettable, 42 16, loss to Arizona in the desert. Then on Friday, a rejuvenated Oregon State running game nearly spurred a massive upset in the 117th Civil War after entering the game among the nation's five worst teams running the ball per game. The Ducks won, 36 35, on a game winning drive in the final two minutes.

Despite as many victories as Chip Kelly had in his first season as UO coach, Helfrich said criticism is "part of the deal."

"And no, it doesn't bother me," he said. "We're at a place where if the record doesn't end in hyphen zero there's speculation."

The Ducks won't practice until Saturday. After a Sunday practice, they'll be off again for finals until Dec. 13, which will serve as their first practice knowing their bowl opponent.

"It was a great football game and it was not from our standpoint the most cleanly played game," Helfrich said of his first Civil War as head coach. "Great back and forth second half and obviously Joe Staley Authentic Jersey from our standpoint, Joe Staley Jersey Womens obviously a fantastic finish and anything can happen in those games and it did."

Oregon's coaches left for six days of recruiting on Sunday morning, Helfrich said. They'll return for the weekend's practices before leaving for the final week of recruiting allowed this month under NCAA rules.

"We don't have a ton of seniors so we're kind of filling some slots, o line and d line, obviously are areas we need to continue to develop our depth," Helfrich said.
