ESPN's Mel Kiper projects Lions to draft UCLA LB Akeem Ayers

ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. unveiled his first NFL mock draft of the year today, projecting the Detroit Lions to pick UCLA outside linebacker Akeem Ayers at No. 13 overall.

Ayers is a 6foot4, 255pounder who started the past two seasons for the Bruins. In 2010, he tied for the team lead with four sacks, was second with 10 tackles for loss and was fourth with 68 total tackles.

Writes Kiper of Ayers: "Detroit needs help Vontae Davis NFL Jersey in the secondary, but unless it moves down, it can't get good value here, with the top two corners off the board. However, the Lions won't complain if Ayers, a freakish athlete with smarts and outstanding versatility at the linebacker position, is still here. After upgrading their defensive line in 2010, the Lions need guys that can fly to Dwayne Allen Youth Jersey the ball, and Ayers is a sidelinetosideline tackler who can also rush the QB and drop into coverage. The cornerbacks Kiper references are Louisiana State's Patrick Peterson and Nebraska's Prince Amukamara. Kiper projects Peterson to go No. 2 overall to T.Y. Hilton Youth Jersey Denver and Amukamara to go No. 9 to Dallas.

Kiper rates Ayers as the No. 12 overall player and No. 2 linebacker, behind Von Miller of Texas A "Exceptional athleticism makes him versatile, but his production has also been very good," Kiper writes of Ayers. Kiper's ESPN comrade Todd McShay also updated Coby Fleener Youth Jersey his mock draft today. He has the Lions taking Colorado tackle Nate Solder at No. 13. McShay has Ayers going No. 18 to San Diego. He also predicts Peterson and Amukamara Vick Ballard Men's Jersey will be off the board by No. 9.

Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley is projected to go No. 1 to Carolina by Kiper. McShay has Clemson defensive end Da'Quan Bowers at the top. Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton, the Auburn quarterback, is projected at No. 10 to Washington, and 2009 Heisman winner Mark Ingram, the Alabama running back from Flint, is slotted at No. 15 to Miami in Kiper's mock draft.
