Breaking down Super Bowl XLIII quarter

Using quick timing passes, the Steelers quarterback had a sizzling start, completing seven of his eight throws in the quarter for 118 yards on backtoback drives that netted a field goal and an early secondquarter TD. Roethlisberger had a 118.8 passer rating more significant when considering his 22.6 rating in XL was lowestever for a Super Bowlwinning quarterback. Unlike his previous Super Bowl, Roethlisberger was not undone by earlygame jitters.

SUPER STEELERS: Pittsburgh strikes late for sixth title

LOPRESTI: Steelers stand alone

point: Steelers settled for an 18yard Jeff Reed field goal the shortest in a Super Bowl since Roy Gerela's from the same distance in Super Bowl X after an apparent 1yard TD rumble by Roethlisberger was reversed by an instant replay review that showed the quarterback's knee touched the turf before the goal line. Losing four points in the exchange took the luster off Pittsburgh's opening drive.

play: a thirdand10 from the Arizona 44 late in the quarter, Roethlisberger came up with his first Houdini impression of the game. He scrambled left, then avoided a wouldbe sack while scampering Stephon Gilmore Jersey Ebay right. Then he fired a bullet to Heath Miller for 11 yards, keeping alive a drive that culminated with a TD to open the second quarter.

stat: Steelers amassed 140 total yards on 18 plays in the first quarter, establishing early dominance. Arizona gained only 13 yards on five offensive snaps.

coach Ken Whisenhunt won the coin toss but elected to defer to the second half. Rather than put the football immediately in the hands of his prolific offense, he kicked off to the Steelers, who proceeded to rip off a nineplay, 72yard touchdown drive.

Second quarter: Pittsburgh 17, Arizona 7point: the Steelers opened the quarter by completing an 11play TD drive that provided a 10point lead, the Cardinals responded with a nineplay, 83yard drive to close the gap to 107. Warner completed his last seven passes of the drive, including a 35yard connection with Anquan Boldin to the 1yard line that set up a looping 1yard TD toss to Ben Patrick. The drive swung the momentum for Arizona's offense, which suddenly found the rhythm lacking on previous possessions.

plays: linebacker Karlos Dansby picked off a Roethlisberger pass that was deflected at the line of scrimmage by Bryan Robinson late in the second half that put Arizona in striking range to take the lead until Harrison made an even bigger interception to snuff the threat.

stat: receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who entered the game with an NFL postseasonrecord 419 yards and three consecutive 100yard games, didn't post his only reception of the half (12 yards) until 43 seconds remained on the clock.

being out of timeouts, Warner conceivably had enough time to make three throws to the end zone, when the Cardinals lined up with a firstandgoal from the 1yard line with Stephon Gilmore Jersey 18 seconds remaining before the half. Warner, though, gambled by forcing an inside throw to Boldin that Harrison picked off at the goal line for his pivotal INT. In retrospect, it would have been safer to throw the ball deeper to the end zone. The http://www.billsofficialnflstore.com Steelers receiver had a role on two crucial plays in the quarter both coming on quick, hitch passes as he was aligned against single coverage on the opposite side of a threereceiver bunch. On a secondand13 from the Steelers' 15, Holmes drew a facemask penalty, which tacked 15 yards onto a 6yard gain. The next time, he used an inside juke to lead to a 15yard gain to the Cardinals' 21yard line, setting up a short field goal.

point: Cardinals committed three personal foul penalties to greatly assist the Steelers' 16play field goal drive that consumed much of the clock in the quarter. First, a Dominique RodgersCromartie facemask helped Pittsburgh dig out of a fieldposition hole. Then a Karlos Dansby late hit on Roethlisberger. And Adrian Wilson pummeled holder Mitch Berger on a field goal attempt that gave the Steelers a fresh set of downs.

play: was unable to sustain its opening drive of the half after receiving the secondhalf kickoff. On the pivotal thirdand6, Warner was apparently sacked by James Farrior, with James Harrison recovering the ensuing fumble. The play was reversed to an incompletion after an instant replay challenge revealed that Warner's arm was moving forward as the ball left his hand. Still, the Cardinals quest to gain momentum for the second half was squashed.

stat: three quarters, the Cardinals were flagged eight times for 81 yards. The Steelers were penalized twice for 15 yards.

decision to shove Roethlisberger in the back after he released the football epitomized the lack of composure that repeatedly stung the Cardinals. The 15yard penalty moved the ball from midfield to the Cardinals' 35yard line.

Fourth quarter: Pittsburgh 27, Arizona 23point: biggest nightmare came to life in crunch time, as prolific Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald scored two TDs to accent Arizona's comeback to take a 2320 lead with 2:37 remaining. Fitzgerald made it a onepossession game with a leaping 1yard TD grab, then took a Kurt Warner pass over the middle and romped through for a 64yard leadchanging TD. The second TD was Fitzgerald's seventh of this postseason a new NFL record for receiving TDs in a postseason. His four consecutive 100yard games in the postseason is also a new record.

play: amazing 6yard TD with 35 seconds remaining lifted the Steelers to their lastminute comeback victory. Holmes demonstrated remarkable poise in leaping for the pass in the back corner of the http://www.billsofficialnflstore.com/Black+Stephon+Gilmore+Jersey end zone and keeping both of his toes inbounds as he crashed to the turf. A tough catch in the most critical situation.

stat: who passed for 377 yards, became the first quarterback in Super Bowl history to post three consecutive 300yard games.

rookie cornerback Dominique RodgersCromartie bit on a route to the flat and allowed Holmes to slip past him while Aaron Francisco slipped to the turf for a 43yard catchandrun that set up the gamewinning TD.
