Stephen the best advice I think I could give is just keep at it. Become a student of reality and examine why real-world objects look real, and try to emulate that look. Read all you can about 3d and 2d techniques. Go through the many tutorials at Newtek's site. And if you ever want to send me anything I'll be happy to try and help.
